The name "Oaksterdam" was coined by combining "Oakland" with "Amsterdam" in tribute to that European bastion of cannabis tolerance. Located between Lake Merrit and downtown Oakland, Oaksterdam has been designated by lawmakers as the "medical-marijuana use" district for the city.
If there was a case where marijuana actually promoted urban renewal, Oaksterdam is it. Medical dispensaries and cannabis cafes have revitalized what was once a bleak area of urban decay. The Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Club is a great place to get acclimated: The OCBC has been at the forefront of the medical-pot movement in California and has been assisting patients in acquiring medical clearance for over a decade.
The neighborhood even has its own newspaper, which keeps Californians up to date on medical-marijuana developments. It's called The Oaksterdam News, and the publisher is none other than Richard Lee, who runs the Bulldog Cafe' and was named the 2006 Freedom Fighter of the Year.
In November 2004, Oakland voters used Measure Z to tell their municipal government in no uncertain terms that they wanted marijuana to be the city's lowest law-enforcement priority. Obviously, you cna enjoy the pleasures of Oaksterdam infinitely more if you're from California and carry the proper medical-marijuana ID, but there are still a number of spin-off businesses catering to the cannabis market, including grow stores and headshops. -DS
